We are a society addicted to our drug of choice (DOC). Drug addiction isn’t just about illegal drugs. Alcohol, marijuana, pain meds are all drugs used to alleviate physical, emotional, and psychological pain. What makes anything addictive is one’s dependence upon it and extent one will go to keep doing or using it.
Unfortunately, lost in this entire situation of legal and illegal drug usage are the messages our children are receiving when adults reach for their DOC. That extra glass of wine or a double on the rocks after a difficult day; or a little hit of pot to calm the nerves sends a mixed and confusing message to children. The message conveyed in commercials, in homes, and at schools is when you are not feeling right, there is something for that ailment.
In today’s video blog, I challenge every adult, including myself to examine the messages we are sending to our children. It is not what we say that sends the message, but what we do that delivers it. Are you engaging in a behavior that discourages drug use or one that demonstrates a dependence upon them? Only you can answer that question.
